Well don't just stand there; open the door for your lady! And there you go chap, help her out accommodate into the chair. No, don't pick up the fork like that! And that bottle of red wine doesn't really go well with the salmon fillet.
Afraid of hearing this whenever you may go out on a formal dinner? In this case, stick around for a simple but compelling guide on how to eat out like a sir; staying classy at the table and ordering a convenient bottle of wine isn't that hard to master.
When you're taking her out for dinner, try to look decent. Sneakers and T-shirts aren't the best option for this event, so leave them in the closet. Instead, go for a jacket and a shirt. She will also do her hair, put on a dress and shoes, so you will definitely wish to be compatible on the dress code. In case of a dinner with a possible client or business partner a suit would be the first option to take in consideration.
Are you the one who's been planning the event? Yes, a dinner in town is an event, no matter how often you might do it. Then, you are the one who's going to get the attention of the waiter and also who's going to pay. A sir knows to leave his credit card at the reception when entering the restaurant, or discretely inform the waiter that he will be the one to receive the bill.
However enthusiastic you may feel, don't call out (or yell) the waiter. Try to make eye contact, or raise your right hand with the index finger slightly pointing out. Remember that you are the host so allow your companion to order first; a nice idea is to (again, discretely) inform the waiter on who's ordering first by saying something like: "My guest would like to order... ".
Getting complicated? I didn't think so, either; even more, we're halfway through this, so we can afford a sip of water. Still, when you are in a restaurant, a good wine will brink up sparkles in one's mood. Choosing a good wine isn't all about it's region, age, or any of the other 99 elements only expert sommeliers are able to tell about. A good wine is one which you enjoy. Nine out of ten times, the first gut choice is great.
Asking the waiter to recommend a bottle of wine is a safe measure; however, remember to point out on the menu a wine that's around your affordable price range; the waiter will understand and recommend a drink which will fit into that category. One more thing; never, ever, hold the glass by the bowl part; always the stem or the foot! It looks and even feels better, sir.
Finally, the food is being served. Take the napkin and place it on your lap, then start eating. You might be hungry like a horse, but sir, remember to take a breath each few bites. Cut the food one piece at a time, and wait until you finished one piece before cutting another. Yes sir, you are now eating like a man with etiquette.
Once you're finished, do not let your fork and knife reside on the margins of the plate. Instead, please do an extra effort and place them at 10:20 o'clock, with the fork facing up. The waiter will understand that you finished and enjoyed the meal.
A great time to ask for the note (if you did not leave your card at the reception) is when the waiter comes to take out the plate. Please remember sir, a tip should be around 10% of the bill.
This being said, I'm confident you will really enjoy your next dinner out in town. Bon appétit!
